Justice of DF suspends 12% export tax on oil

cbn27 August 2026 at 22:42

The 17th Federal Court of DF suspended the collection of 12% Export Tax on crude oil and bituminous minerals, granting the request of the Brazilian Association of Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Companies (ABEP). The Federal Revenue Service will be prohibited from collecting the tax from companies represented by the association until the final judgment. The charge was established by Resolution Gecex No. 938/2026, published on July 9, as a compensatory measure to federal government subsidies to curb the rise in diesel and gasoline prices. The judge ruled that the resolution renewed a charge from Provisional Measure 1,340/2026, which lost effectiveness for not having been analyzed by Congress.

Why talk about a "rentrée" when there is no "sortie"?

The author questions the use of the term "rentrée" in Portuguese political discourse, arguing that, contrary to what the term suggests, there is no true restart in politics, as politicians rarely truly leave the scene. He argues that the expression "silly season" for summer is incorrectly applied, as politics operates year-round, and that the concept of post-holiday return is a media fiction, since political protagonists are always present and active.

Make-Believe Governments

This article is a reflection on political hypocrisy, pointing out that rulers show no fear in creating laws they know will not be enforced, nor in repealing legislation that is dead letter or simply not intended to be enforced, thus criticizing the lack of coherence and seriousness in government actions.

The executive order comes in the context of a broader tariff war between the United States and Canada, which has already provoked significant tensions in bilateral relations between the two countries.
