The Lula government should foresee a "real" surplus of around R$ 10 billion (0.1% of GDP) in the 2027 Budget, considering all expenses, including those discounted for the fiscal target. The current expectation for 2026 is a deficit of 0.4% of GDP (R$ 52 billion). In an interview, the Planning Minister, Bruno Moretti, stated that the 2027 Preliminary Budget Proposal (Ploa) will establish a 0.5% of GDP adjustment already in the first year of the next government, bringing the result back to the black. The article also mentions other political issues under consideration, such as the 6x1 schedule and the provisional measure on the "blusinhas" tax rate.

Andrea Silva proposes extinction of Varzim Lazer with integration of workers in the City Council

The president of the Póvoa de Varzim City Council, Andrea Silva, announced that she will propose the extinction of the municipal company Varzim Lazer at the executive meeting on August 31st, guaranteeing the integration of workers into the local authority. The mayor explained that a new court ruling now allows for safeguarding this integration, something that was not possible before. The decision comes after intense local political debate, including an open letter from Aliança Poveira and a request for exoneration of the Board of Directors by CHEGA, which is part of the company's management. Aliança Poveira criticized the measure, stating that legal mechanisms for worker integration already existed. Andrea Silva defended that the priority was always the defense of jobs and the labor stability of employees.

The regional government of the Azores announced the hiring of 108 Operational Assistants for the schools in the region, which is seen as positive news. However, the author of this opinion, Rui Teixeira, argues that the shortage on the ground is much greater than the number announced, considering that the Azores have approximately 40 schools and 120 school nuclei with kindergarten and primary education, most of which need more human resources.

Sustainability without justice is not enough

This opinion article addresses the cyclical discussion about the sustainability of Social Security in Portugal, warning that, although the warnings about increasing life expectancy and the decreasing worker-to-pensioner ratio are pertinent, the fundamental question of the system's justice is rarely raised first. The text criticizes the tendency to focus only on demographic and financial numbers, without first questioning whether the proposed solutions are equitable for all citizens.
