Black Maria: the popular Black kitchen recreated for the white elite
oglobo27 August 2026 at 17:35
Preta Maria, Bela Gil's most recent restaurant in Cidade Matarazzo, one of the most luxurious addresses in São Paulo, was born to celebrate Afro-Brazilian culture, but generates a contradiction by being installed in a high-end complex with prices like R$20 for a bottle of filtered water. The article analyzes the tension between the restaurant's discourse of ancestry, community, and popular food and the luxury environment in which it is located, questioning whether there is a genuine valorization of Black culture or a transformation of its symbols into folkloric commodities destined for an elite.
