Most new mammal species discovered in the Global South in the last 35 years are in museums in wealthy countries

A study revealed that between 1990 and 2025, more than a thousand new mammal species were scientifically described in 105 countries, with 95% of them discovered in Global South countries, mainly in tropical regions. However, 60% of the holotypes – the reference specimens used to scientifically describe each new species – are held in collections of institutions in the Global North, highlighting an imbalance in the ownership of scientific heritage and raising questions about access to biological resources and inequality in scientific research among different regions of the world.

At Monte Molião, in Lagos, the doors opened to a past that is discovered little by little

The archaeological site of Monte Molião, in Lagos, is a location with traces of occupation from the Iron Age (4th century BC) to the Roman-Imperial period (1st-2nd centuries AD), which has been investigated since 2006 through a collaboration between the Lagos Municipal Council, the Faculty of Letters and UNIARQ at the University of Lisbon. The project, directed by Professor Ana Margarida Arruda and currently by researcher Elisa Sousa, revealed well-preserved urban planning, with three organized sectors, a Roman cistern and traces of various activities such as metallurgy, pottery and grain processing. Interdisciplinary studies, including malacological fauna analysis, indicate possible environmental changes and high-energy events that affected the landscape over the centuries. The project also includes a strong pedagogical component, having trained approximately 250 to 300 archaeology students, and envisions the enhancement of the site with the creation of a visit route and the future exhibition of pieces at the Museum of Lagos.

A muscle graft mimics the effects of exercise: it increases strength, muscle mass and bone density

A small graft of muscle tissue capable of contracting continuously managed to reproduce in rats some of the systemic effects associated with physical exercise: greater muscle mass, greater strength and greater bone density. The breakthrough, summarized in a study published in the journal Nature Aging, opens a possible avenue for treating age-related muscle loss in people who cannot exercise.

Historical record in La Palma: the most distant radiation in the universe detected, at 8,000 million light-years

Telescopes installed at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, in La Palma, detected very high energy radiation coming from a blazar called OP 313, located about 8 billion light-years away, making it the most distant object of this type ever observed at these energies. The signal, captured by the LST-1 and MAGIC telescopes, comes from an active galaxy with a supermassive black hole at its center, which generates enormous jets of particles and radiation. This historic detection allows scientists to go back billions of years in time and constitutes a valuable clue to reconstructing the history of stars and galaxies.
