The UN International Tribunal confirmed the death of Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian-Serb military chief known as the "Butcher of Bosnia," at age 84, in a hospital in The Hague. Convicted of war crimes during the Balkan wars in the 1990s, Mladic was found responsible for the Srebrenica massacre in 1995, when approximately 8,000 Muslim men and boys were killed — the bloodiest in Europe since World War II. Judge Graciela Gatti Santana ordered an investigation into the circumstances of his death.
