Brazil will start screening for type 5 diabetes; find out what the disease is

Brazil will begin tracking type 5 diabetes, a form of the disease associated with malnutrition, after its official recognition by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in April of last year. The first regions to participate will be the North and Northeast, where the highest rates of malnutrition and food insecurity have been detected. Endocrinologist Hermelinda Cordeiro Pedrosa, global vice president of the IDF, states that the official classification will give visibility to a long-neglected condition, allowing patients to be identified, incorrect diagnoses to be corrected, and progress toward treatment more suited to the specific characteristics of this type of diabetes.
