Outdated Volta website shows 16 municipalities without collection. Manager says there are five

The Volta deposit and refund system indicates on its website that 16 municipalities have no packaging collection points, but the managing entity SDR Portugal states that only five municipalities — Alcoutim, Mora, Ribeira de Pena, Santa Marta de Penaguião and Corvo — do not have equipment, blaming the website being out of date. Mayors from municipalities such as Oleiros, Mourão and Mora confirm the absence of machines, with populations having to travel dozens of kilometres to neighbouring municipalities to return packaging and recover the 0.10 euro deposit, criticizing the lack of equitable access to the system.

Competition pressures Meo's accounts, but restructuring will produce effects "in the coming quarters"

Meo faced intense competitive pressure in the second quarter of 2026, resulting in revenue stagnation and a 7.5% drop in EBITDA to 222 million euros in the quarter. In the first half, total EBITDA reached 443 million euros, a decline of 7.5% compared to the same period last year, while revenues grew only 0.2% to 1,297 million euros. The company is undergoing a full restructuring, having already lost 1,200 workers between January 2025 and end of 2026, with the aim of saving 45 million euros annually. In response to pressure in the consumer segment, Meo has been focusing on diversification, with Meo Energia growing 36% and reaching 256,000 customers, in addition to strengthening the business segment. CEO Ana Figueiredo stated that the benefits of the transformation will be visible throughout 2027, emphasizing the need for regulatory predictability in the telecommunications sector.

Volta system does not show collection points in six municipalities of the Alentejo

The portal of Sistema Volta, which allows the collection of packaging through a deposit and refund system, did not show any collection point this Thursday in six municipalities of Alentejo: Alvito, Barrancos, Fronteira, Marvão, Mora and Mourão. The managing entity of the system states, however, that only the municipality of Mora does not effectively have a collection point registered in the region, suggesting that the absence of information in the other municipalities may be a technical issue with the portal. The system, which has been operating since April 10, aims to facilitate packaging recycling through a deposit and refund mechanism.
