Brazilians fear voting in NY, and Brazil seeks voting center protected from ICE
Público27 August 2026 at 08:14
Brazil's general consulate in New York is seeking voting locations protected from the American immigration agency ICE, due to Brazilian immigrants' fear of voting on the city's streets. Many Brazilians living in areas with higher immigration agent presence fear leaving home to exercise their right to vote, hesitating to leave their neighborhoods for fear of being stopped or deported. Brazilian diplomacy is working to find voting centers where voters can form lines inside buildings, avoiding exposure on the streets.
