More than 2.2 billion people currently live in cities across Asia and the Pacific, a number expected to almost double to 3.4 billion by 2050. However, about 697 million people live in informal settlements and more than 65% of urban workers survive in the informal economy, highlighting the growing inequality between the technological development of cities and the quality of life of the majority of the population, which has been left behind in the promise of smart urbanization.
