The city of Rio de Janeiro's government published adjustments to Municipal Decree 57.823, which regulates the circulation of electric vehicles throughout the city, now differentiating between mopeds and self-propelled vehicles, which were previously treated equally under the previous legislation. The new rule comes just days after an accident killed a mother and her son on an electric bicycle on Rua Conde de Bonfim, in Tijuca. Among the changes, registration plates and a driver's license will no longer be required for operators of some vehicles, and the South Zone waterfront will have a weekend and holiday leisure bike lane exclusive to self-propelled vehicles.
