Scientists from the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom, discovered evidence of a zone saturated with metal-rich fluids two or three kilometers below the surface of the Soufrière Hills volcano on the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean. The researchers used earthquake data recorded under the volcano to map its interior, avoiding the need for deep drilling. The identified zone is interpreted as a possible magmatic brine lens containing metals of scientific and economic interest. The study was published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
