DPU asks government for 'urgent' measures to curb FARC presence in Indigenous Land on border with Colombia

The Federal Public Defender's Office asked the federal government to take urgent measures to protect indigenous communities in the Alto Rio Negro Indigenous Land, in Amazonas, a border region with Colombia. According to the DPU, men identified as members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) are circulating through communities in the region, threatening residents. The letter was sent to the government after reports from indigenous people. The Farc were officially dismantled in 2016, but dissident groups remain active in Colombia and maintain business dealings with Brazilian criminal factions. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office has also opened a civil investigation to look into the group's presence in the area.

Francisco Pinto Balsemão is going to give his name to an avenue in Cascais

Francisco Pinto Balsemão, founder of Expresso and SIC, is to have an avenue named after him in Cascais. The "Avenida Francisco Pinto Balsemão" will be located next to the Forte de São Jorge de Oitavos, connecting the Pedro Monjardino Roundabout to Avenida Nossa Senhora do Cabo, and will be inaugurated on September 1st. The Cascais Municipal Council justifies this tribute as recognition for Balsemão's "exceptional contribution" to the consolidation of Portuguese democracy, defense of press freedom and development of the country. Francisco Pinto Balsemão died on November 1, 2025, at the age of 88.

New 2026/2027 school calendar has already been published and these students will start classes later

The new school calendar for 2026/2027 in Portugal determines that the majority of students return to classes between September 11 and 15, but students of scientific-humanistic courses in secondary education — including Sciences and Technologies, Socioeconomic Sciences, Languages and Humanities, and Visual Arts — only start on September 21.
