600-meter-wide ice block that fell from glacier may cause floods in Nepal, scientists say

Scientists believe that deadly floods in Nepal were caused by the detachment of a huge block of ice from a glacier, which plummeted thousands of meters down to the valley below, in a phenomenon known as a glacial avalanche. A geologist from the University of Calgary analyzed satellite images and described the site as looking like the site where a bomb had exploded, with deposits from the shattered glacier. Although the initial assessment points to the glacial avalanche as the main cause, scientists warn that it is still too early to rule out other possible factors behind the sudden flood.
