Funchal has some buildings influenced by Art Nouveau which, at the time, gave the city a note of modernity, but today few remain. Art Nouveau was an international artistic movement that emerged in the late 19th century, rejecting old styles and imitations of the past, focusing on organic forms inspired by nature.
