Government extends subsidy for gasoline until September 9

extra26 August 2026 at 15:17

The Ministry of Finance extended until September 9 the subsidy of R$ 0.44 per liter for gasoline, a measure that would have expired on the 31st. The extension was published in the Official Gazette and can be renewed again if oil prices remain high due to the conflict in the Middle East. The subsidy has been in effect since May 25, costing about R$ 2.4 billion in two months, and is paid directly to gasoline producers and importers as part of a set of government measures to curb rising prices. Oil is trading around US$ 85 per barrel, and after September 9 the government will assess whether it will be possible to extend the benefit through another legal mechanism.
