Frenchman Bryan Coquard, from the Cofidis team, won in a sprint the 8th stage of the Vuelta a España, beating Jordi Meeus and Mads Pedersen at the finish. The stage was marked by an intense pace and by a crash involving several riders.
Due to Tadej Pogacar's retirement after the crash, Spanish rider Enric Mas inherited the lead of the Vuelta general classification. Mas thus began wearing the red leader's jersey of the Spanish race.
Pogacar, one of the main favorites for overall victory, saw his participation in the Vuelta end prematurely after the incident on the road. His exit from the race represents a significant blow to his team's aspirations.
With this victory, Coquard achieved his first stage success in this edition of the Vuelta, while the general classification is now led by Enric Mas, who aims to secure a good result in the final standings.
