The United States Army announced on Friday that it intercepted and destroyed an alleged drug trafficking vessel in the eastern Pacific, in an operation coordinated with the Ecuadorian government. According to the information, this was the first joint action of this kind between the two allies.
The US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) reported through social media platform X that its forces intercepted the vessel, which was operating as a "floating refueling station" in international waters of the eastern Pacific.
Intelligence information confirmed that the vessel had been previously identified and was subject to sanctions from the US Treasury Department. According to the statement, the vessel was operating in support of the violent narco-terrorist organization Los Choneros.
The SOUTHCOM statement also reported that the crew of the intercepted vessel was taken to an unspecified location in the text.
