Almost 60% of adults worldwide suffer from atherosclerosis without knowing it, making it a silent disease responsible for approximately 20 million deaths annually. Cardiovascular diseases, mainly heart attack and stroke, are the leading cause of death globally, and atherosclerosis — which consists of the accumulation of fatty plaques in the arteries — is behind most of these fatal events.
