Review: Lighthearted science fiction, 'Zumbido' targets the crazy world we live in

The book "Zumbido" by Brasilia-born writer Vinícius Portella blends science fiction with humor to explore a post-pandemic world where one third of the global population begins hearing an insistent low-frequency buzzing. The work follows the developments of this mysterious phenomenon from a scientific perspective, set in Brazil, and presents the buzzing as a "small migraine the size of the world" that hammers eardrums and tortures temples. Portella, also an editor and author of other novels and short stories, uses the surreal premise to make a lighthearted critique of the contemporary world.
