Germany risks missing gas target with industry under threat of harsh winter

Euronews Portugal29 August 2026 at 06:00

Germany may not reach the gas storage filling target for November if injections continue at the current rate, the country's storage association warned. The situation puts pressure on meeting the targets set for the period.

The warning comes at a time when storage levels remain below desired levels. The association warned that, although there is no immediate gas shortage, the combination of low levels with a harsh winter could represent a significant risk.

If temperatures are very low during the cold season, supply may not be sufficient to meet demand. This situation could directly affect German industrial production, which depends heavily on natural gas.

Gas reserves are essential for the functioning of the German economy, especially in the industrial sector. The government continues to monitor the situation to ensure that a critical point is not reached during the winter months.
