The Army colonel Álvaro Roberto Cruz Ferreira Lima died after falling from a paraglider into the sea at São Conrado Beach, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, on Friday afternoon (28). The military officer was pulled from the water by Fire Department teams in cardiac arrest, received first aid on the sand, and was taken in critical condition to Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital, in Gávea. According to the hospital administration, despite the medical team's efforts, he did not survive.

According to the Fire Department, the incident began at 1:53 PM and mobilized military personnel from the 3rd Maritime Group (GMar), the Air Operations Group (GOA), and the Rescue Vessels Coordination (CER). The rescue was carried out at the takeoff and landing area for hang gliders and paragliders, one of the busiest spots for these sports in the region.

According to the club administration responsible for the flying site, the cause of the accident was a kite string that became tangled in the colonel's paraglider. The runway used by the colonel is regularly frequented by free flight and paragliding practitioners.
