SMS has stopped being treated as a declining channel and has taken on, throughout 2026, the function of infrastructure behind digital corporate communication. Instead of competing for space with WhatsApp and RCS (Rich Communication Services), the text message has come to operate as a fallback mechanism: when sending through a richer channel is not completed, the system reroutes essential information via SMS automatically, without human intervention.
The movement is supported by the near-universal presence of cell phones in the country. Numbers from the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) indicate that Brazil ended the first quarter of 2026 with 276.4 million mobile accesses, a total higher than the population itself.
In parallel, a survey by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) shows that the internet was present in 95% of households in 2025, which still leaves some homes subject to unstable connections or no active data plan.
In this interval, SMS sustains itself by not requiring an internet connection to function, guaranteeing the delivery of critical messages even in situations of network instability.
