SAPO28 August 2026 at 20:06

Yaya Touré entered the history of the UEFA Champions League by becoming the first African coach to reach the competition's group stage. The feat was achieved in his first project as head coach, after hanging up his boots as a professional player.

The former Ivorian international led Slovan Bratislava, the Slovak team, to the Champions League group stage. The qualification was confirmed this Wednesday, sealing a historic milestone in European football.

Touré's achievement opens the door for other African coaches to aspire to reach the top European competitions. The former player, who was known for his brilliant career as a midfielder, has now also demonstrated his abilities in the technical leadership of a team.
