"Solar panels that don't cast shade": the Spanish invention revolutionizing coexistence between agriculture and energy

Solar energy has been radically transforming the Spanish agricultural landscape, where it is increasingly common to find large surfaces of photovoltaic panels in areas previously dedicated to cultivation, fallow land or olive groves. Spain has one of the largest extensions of areas where solar panels and agriculture coexist, which implies a competition for the same resource: solar radiation.

The technical difficulty lies in the fact that a conventional photovoltaic plant was designed to maximize solar radiation capture, which is not always compatible with the need to maintain agricultural soil productivity. Researchers from the University of Jaén analyzed this issue and proposed solutions that allow coexistence between energy production and agricultural activity.

These solutions, described as "solar panels that don't cast shade", aim to ensure that the soil does not lose productivity even under the presence of panels. The goal is not to turn this coexistence into a battle for territory, but rather to find a balance that allows simultaneous electricity production and the maintenance of agricultural activity on the same lands.
