The Avante candidate for President of the Republic, Augusto Cury, stated during a press conference held by CBN, the newspaper O Globo, and the magazine Valor that he would invite a group of notable jurists from Brazil and abroad to analyze the dynamics of the January 8 events and make a decision on a possible amnesty for those convicted.
Cury said he does not intend to enter the political polarization on the topic and called the case an "endless war" that needs to be resolved adequately. When directly questioned about what his opinion on amnesty would be, the candidate did not answer directly.
In the candidate's assessment, some arrests resulting from the January 8 events were disproportionate. He stated that it is fair, extremely fair and serious, and that he will decide the matter based on analysis from a group of jurists.
Cury declared that he will properly examine the proceedings to understand whether there was indeed an attempted coup and which sentences he considers disproportionate. He acknowledged that the issue fuels polarization, but stated that he intends to end what he called the "endless war".
