The Kidney Hospital in Goiânia performed on this Tuesday (25) a robotic radical prostatectomy commanded remotely by oncological urologist Dr. Marcelo Andres Orvieto Sagredo, who was in Santiago, Chile, about 3,000 kilometers away. The procedure represented a technological milestone in remote robotic surgery in Brazil.
The main technological challenge of the operation was ensuring that the surgeon's hand movements were reproduced precisely by the robot, without the physical distance causing delays or interruptions. For this, a highly robust communication structure specifically planned for the procedure was necessary.
The communication infrastructure used included two independent fiber optic connections, a 5G network as redundancy, and a dedicated VPN with an exclusive IP. This combination of resources allowed maintaining the stability and security of the connection throughout the entire surgery, minimizing risks of failures in the transmission of commands.
