Europa League Draw Prohibits Benfica from Visiting Italian Club

UEFA rules for European competition draws will impose limitations on the Champions League and Europa League league phase draws. Benfica, who qualified by defeating Aarhus, is one of the teams affected by these conditions.

The restriction is related to the recent history between Benfica and Juventus. The two teams have faced each other in the last two editions of European competitions, so a new encounter between the two clubs cannot happen this season in the league phase.

There is, however, an exception to the rule. If the draw determines a new confrontation between Benfica and Juventus, it can only take place in Lisbon, with Turin excluded from the possibilities to host the match.

The rule applied by UEFA aims to prevent certain matchups from repeating in three consecutive editions of European competitions. Thus, clubs that faced each other in the previous two seasons are subject to specific restrictions during the draw. Benfica will therefore have to wait for the draw to learn their opponents in the league phase.
