Losses from 'false accidents' by June near total 2025 value, says GNR

Jornal Económico28 August 2026 at 08:35

In the first half of 2026, scams involving "false accidents" caused cumulative losses of 72,540 euros to victims, a value very close to the total recorded throughout 2025, which was 77,480 euros. The Guarda Nacional Republicana warned about the growing sophistication of these crimes, with an isolated case registering losses of 15,450 euros. GNR predicts that the overall financial impact of 2026 will far exceed that of last year.

Between January and June, the Guard recorded 30 complaints of this type of scam, representing an increase of 15.4% compared to the 26 cases reported in the same period in 2025. The district of Faro leads the incidence in 2026 with six occurrences, followed by Lisbon, Porto, Viseu, and Beja.

In this type of crime, suspects simulate non-existent collisions to demand immediate payments and access victims' bank accounts. GNR highlighted that the deliberate targeting of drivers over 60 years old constitutes a central strategy of the scammers, taking advantage of their emotional vulnerability, fear of legal complications, and lesser familiarity with electronic payment methods.
