Guterres launches appeal for €940 million and calls for fighting the "virus of indifference"

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, launched today an appeal to raise $1.1 billion, equivalent to 940 million euros, destined for combating the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The requested amount aims to finance the humanitarian response and public health operations necessary to contain the spread of the disease.

During the announcement, Guterres strongly criticized what he called the "virus of indifference," referring to the lack of attention and resources that the international community has devoted to the humanitarian crisis in the DRC. The UN chief warned that this lack of mobilization can have serious consequences in the fight against the epidemic.

The appeal comes in a context of growing concern over the spread of Ebola in the region, where health authorities face enormous logistical and security challenges to reach the affected populations. The World Health Organization has repeatedly warned about the risk of the disease spreading to neighboring countries.
