A man suspected of posing as a street vendor to commit robberies amid traffic on Avenida Brasil was shot dead Thursday night, in the Manguinhos area, in Rio de Janeiro's North Zone. According to the Military Police, a driver noticed the alleged criminal action and reacted, hitting the man, who died at the scene.
Officers from the Highway Policing Battalion (BPVE) were called after reports of gunshots. Upon arriving at the scene, the agents found the man already dead. The area was cordoned off for forensic work.
The incident caused traffic impacts. One lane of the central lane of Avenida Brasil, near the Manguinhos Refinery, remained occupied in the West Zone direction. Teams from CET-Rio and the Military Police worked at the scene, and the Fire Department was also called. Traffic experienced slowdowns starting from Caju.
The dynamics of the shooting and the man's identity had not yet been clarified, as the story was published before the investigation was concluded.
