China recalls 4,300,000 cars. Europe still studying

Observador27 August 2026 at 23:31

China carried out a recall of 4.3 million vehicles, a high number for a country that does not have the habit of calling vehicles to the workshop. The action was not motivated by defects in the cars, but rather by the presence of retractable electric door latches.

Retractable electric door latches are the center of the issue. China considered that these components represent a sufficient safety problem to justify a massive recall of millions of vehicles.

In Europe, the situation is different. The same retractable electric door latches continue to be sold without any type of limitation or restriction, even after China made this drastic decision.

While China acts preventively with one of the largest recall campaigns in its automotive history, Europe remains in a studying phase of the situation, without yet having taken similar measures regarding this component.

Investing more is not enough to increase productivity

Private business investment in Portugal reached about 13% of GDP in 2025, slightly above the EU average, but hourly productivity continues to represent only about 68% of the European average. This disparity shows that the level of investment alone does not explain the productivity differences, and it is necessary to analyze what happens inside companies after the completion of projects. The European Commission also warns that increased investment without improvements in organizational efficiency and human resource management may not translate into significant productivity gains.
