The Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) suspended on Thursday, on an emergency injunction basis, the disbursements from the electoral fund and the broadcast of electoral airtime for Anthony Garotinho's (Republicanos) candidacy for governor of the state. The decision also prevents the former executive's participation in radio and television debates.
The action was filed by Eduardo Paes's (PSD) coalition, which requested the suspension of disbursements from the Party Fund and the Special Campaign Financing Fund, in addition to the veto on Garotinho's participation in debates and the use of free electoral airtime.
The rapporteur of the action, Electoral Judge Bruno Bodart, voted in favor of granting the full request presented by Paes's campaign, including the return of funds already disbursed, while Garotinho's candidacy is not definitively judged. The vote was followed unanimously by the other members of the court.
There is the understanding that Garotinho would be ineligible for eight years due to a conviction for administrative misconduct, which formed the basis for the suspension request made by the opposing coalition.
