The Monument to D. Maria I, located at the National Palace of Queluz, is undergoing conservation and restoration works promoted by Parques de Sintra, with an investment of approximately 32 thousand euros and completion expected in October 2026. The intervention covers all elements of the sculptural group, including sculptures, plinths, steps and decorative components in metal alloy, with cleaning actions, treatment of pathologies and reconstruction of missing fingers on the figures. The monument, created by sculptor João José Aguiar, was commissioned in 1794 and executed in Italy, having been originally intended for the square in front of the Estrela Basilica, in Lisbon, before being installed in Queluz in the 20th century. The work constitutes a tribute to Queen D. Maria I, surrounded by four figures representing the continents, alluding to the dimension of the Portuguese empire.
