Afghanistan. NGOs denounce law that prohibits demonstrations

Non-governmental organizations denounced a new 84-page law approved by the Afghan Ministry of Justice that prohibits demonstrations and extends the police detention period from 3 to 10 days. The legislation, which apparently aims to control civil society, was criticized for restricting fundamental freedoms of expression and assembly. The most recent episode of violence occurred in June, when security forces killed two people during a demonstration in Herat province, exemplifying the systematic repression against protests in the country.
