Between 2020 and 2025, 50,218 fires with identifiable points of origin were recorded in mainland Portugal, according to a study by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The Centro region had the highest burned area in the country, with the municipality of Covilhã being the most affected. Although about 31% of the occurrences started in areas classified as high or very high fire hazard, representing 30.6% of the territory, the data shows the concentration of fire risk in certain geographic areas.
