Public support for TAP has already cost 260 million euros in interest since the post-pandemic aid, raising the total cost of state aid to 3,545 million euros. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro assured that the government will recover the costs associated with state aid, arguing that it is an investment that will bring returns to taxpayers. TAP received substantial public support after the crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic, in an effort to guarantee the viability of the Portuguese airline.

Competition pressures Meo's accounts, but restructuring will produce effects "in the coming quarters"

Meo faced intense competitive pressure in the second quarter of 2026, resulting in revenue stagnation and a 7.5% drop in EBITDA to 222 million euros in the quarter. In the first half, total EBITDA reached 443 million euros, a decline of 7.5% compared to the same period last year, while revenues grew only 0.2% to 1,297 million euros. The company is undergoing a full restructuring, having already lost 1,200 workers between January 2025 and end of 2026, with the aim of saving 45 million euros annually. In response to pressure in the consumer segment, Meo has been focusing on diversification, with Meo Energia growing 36% and reaching 256,000 customers, in addition to strengthening the business segment. CEO Ana Figueiredo stated that the benefits of the transformation will be visible throughout 2027, emphasizing the need for regulatory predictability in the telecommunications sector.

European markets mostly negative and not even Mota's 3.88% rise saves the PSI

European stock exchanges closed mostly in negative territory, pressured by the release of the ECB minutes and macroeconomic fears related to inflation and the war in Ukraine, overshadowing the good performance of the technology sector driven by the results of Nvidia and Salesforce. The PSI-20 fell 0.60% to 9,389.24 points, despite the 3.88% rise of Mota-Engil, with Galp leading the losses. In the main squares, only the DAX closed higher, while the French CAC 40 recorded the biggest fall, affected by political instability. The Stoxx 600 lost 0.72% and the EuroStoxx 50 fell 0.71%. The French giant Pernod Ricard sank 7.4% after revising downwards its growth forecasts due to weak demand in the US and China.
