The European Union demanded permanent commitments from Meta to protect children on Facebook and Instagram, threatening fines of up to 6% of turnover. Europe opened a formal investigation against the company, at a time when the US has already fined Meta $18 billion for minors' addiction to social media. The European Commission made clear that "the ball is in Meta's court" to comply with European legislation.
