A new Uefa rule for the Champions League format prevents Real Madrid and Liverpool from meeting at Anfield for the third consecutive season. Since the two clubs have already played in Liverpool in the first two editions of the new Champions League, a potential third meeting between them would have to be mandatory at the Santiago Bernabéu. The restriction is incorporated into the software used by Uefa to draw the matchups of the league phase.
