Yayoi Kusama, one of the most internationally recognized Japanese artists, died at the age of 97. Known for works filled with polka dots, pumpkins, and patterns that appear to repeat infinitely, she built a career spanning more than seven decades and transformed personal experiences, including the hallucinations she claimed to have had since childhood, into her main artistic language. Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, she moved to the United States in the late 1950s and gained international prominence in the 1960s with paintings, installations, performances, and so-called "happenings."
