Mopeds and self-propelled vehicles: see what changes in the traffic rules in Rio
extra27 August 2026 at 09:00
The Rio de Janeiro city government published adjustments to municipal decree 57.823, which regulates the circulation of electric vehicles in the city. The changes come after a fatal accident that killed a mother and her 9-year-old son when they were hit by a bus while riding an electric bicycle. Among the changes, motorized bicycles and self-propelled vehicles are no longer treated as equivalent, and operators of self-propelled vehicles will no longer need license plates or a driver's license, after Contran clarified that these vehicles are not listed in the Renavam. Self-propelled vehicles are also once again allowed to circulate in bike lanes.
