France relaxes production rules for cheese that is a national symbol. Drought is to blame
CNN Portugal27 August 2026 at 07:17
France has decided to temporarily relax production rules for three of its most emblematic cheeses — Comté, Beaufort, and Abondance — due to the severe drought that has hit the country. Producers of these traditional cheeses will be allowed to supplement their cows' feed with additional fodder, something normally prohibited to maintain the quality and characteristics of these products. The measure comes because the lack of rain has drastically reduced the pastures available for cattle, forcing farmers to find alternative food sources to ensure continued production.
