Parties ignore UN appeal on gender identity
Correio da Manhã27 August 2026 at 00:30
The Portuguese parties PSD and CDS-PP ignore the United Nations' appeal not to proceed with bills on gender identity and minors, considering it an "unacceptable interference" in the Portuguese legislative process. A social-democratic source told Correio da Manhã that there is no reason for PSD to withdraw its bill, while the centrists publicly repudiated the UN intervention. This position comes at a time of tension between the Portuguese government and international organizations regarding LGBTQ+ rights issues.
