There has been a significant increase in drownings in Portugal, with almost 60 deaths recorded until May, mainly affecting young people and boys. Heat waves and swimming in unsupervised areas are the main contributing factors to this trend. The lack of a national prevention strategy contrasts with the increase in mortality, and experts are warning about the need to invest in aquatic environment literacy and incentives for lifeguard training.
