The article analyzes the 13th International Ballet Competition of South Africa, held in August, questioning how European criteria of excellence in dance can limit other forms of African artistic expression. It discusses how ballet arrived on the continent through the expansion of European teaching models, which were incorporated and given new meaning over time, but that when these references begin to guide the gaze on dance, other practices originating from the continent may end up being perceived through criteria that do not correspond to their own forms of creation.
